Step 1.
Select the little apple in the far upper right hand portion of the computer screen.
Click the apple
move the curser pointer down to About this mac, and click on About this Mac
Notice: where it says 1 update on the App Store... Row (this means that my computer has one update available.
Step 2.
A little window should pop up on your screen with an overvies of your system.
(This is a screen shot from my computer, as you can see, my computer is running OS X El Capitan version 10.01.1
At this point Select the "Software Update" button.
By clicking Software update, a new window will appear with your available updates
Here is the Software Update screen, Click the Update Button if there is an available update, and follow the prompts, agree to all the questions and re-boot computer if necissary.
